In brief: Argentina eyes new IMF agreement

*Argentina’s Economy Minister Luis Caputo has indicated that the government will negotiate a “new programme” with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with which Argentina has a US$44bn Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement. Speaking at an event organised by Argentine think-tank Fundación Mediterránea, Caputo stated that Argentina’s government led by President Javier Milei had been explaining its new monetary and exchange rate programme to the IMF as part of negotiations for a new deal. “We have the advantage that we have gained a lot of credibility with the Fund and the markets,” said Caputo. However, he also said this was a disadvantage for negotiating purposes as the fact that the economy was recovering meant there was less urgency from the IMF’s side to reach a new agreement quickly. According to IMF sources consulted by Spanish newswire EFE, a technical IMF team arrived in Buenos Aires yesterday to undertake the eighth review of its EFF arrangement with Argentina, following a previous review in January.
