ARGENTINA: Milei secures congressional breakthrough

Argentina’s President Javier Milei registered his first political victory of note this week after a string of defeats since coming to power last December. The lower chamber of congress approved his libertarian government’s omnibus bill of reforms, albeit in a somewhat diluted form, and an accompanying fiscal reform. Milei’s success owed in no small part to a change in strategy. Not only did he refrain from referring to congress as a “nest of rats” but he kept a studied silence, allowing his interior minister, Guillermo Francos, to negotiate (previously a dirty word for Milei) in order to win the requisite legislative support before the debate started.
