CHILE: Carabinero killings cause consternation

Three Carabineros were shot dead on 27 April in southern Chile. Their charred remains were found in the armoured car in which they had been travelling. It was the worst massacre suffered by Chile’s militarised police in recent history. But it was the brutality of the murders that caused particular concern and explained why the authorities did not leap to the conclusion that the attack had been perpetrated by militant Mapuche groups known to be operating in the area.
