Haiti’s new council and prime minister face daunting challenge
Haiti’s new transitional presidential council is up and running, appointing a new prime minister to replace Ariel Henry. Its main priority will be restoring a semblance of peace in order to be able to stage the country’s first elections since 2016. This will be no small task and a democratically elected government remains a distant prospect. The Kenyan government is ready to head a multinational security support (MSS) mission, approved by the United Nations Security Council, but it is not clear when the pledged contingent of 1,000 specially trained police officers will arrive, where they will be based, and how they will set about wresting power from gangs led by Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Chérizier, which have condemned the council as comprising the same old faces and demanded a say in the running of the country.
