Mexican bishop’s abduction sparks concern

The disappearance of Salvador Rangel, the retired Catholic bishop of Chilpancingo-Chilapa diocese in Mexico’s crime-ridden Guerrero state, was the source of shock this week. The bishop was found alive on 29 April and is recovering in hospital. Rangel has been vocal about the need to solve Mexico’s security crisis and is famous for trying to mediate between drug trafficking organisations (DTOs). While the circumstances around his disappearance remain uncertain, the incident once again highlights the levels of insecurity in areas of Mexico and the inability of authorities to contain violent crime.
