China expands its sphere of influence in the Caribbean basin

China’s President Xi Jinping visited Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica and Mexico this week in a tour which retraced the steps of US President Barack Obama (Costa Rica and Mexico) and Vice-President Joe Biden (Trinidad) last month. China is often portrayed as competing with the US for influence in a region keen to diversify its relations and acquire an identity in the global arena beyond being the US “backyard”, the loaded term blunderingly used by US Secretary of State John Kerry two months ago. But, while Chinese investment and loans are happily gobbled up, especially by leaders on the “progressive” Left, there is also a wariness of the Asian giant, notably in Mexico.
