The 20-year anniversary of the uprising in Chiapas by the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN, Zapatistas) on 1 January 1994 prompted an unexpected response from the government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto. Jaime Martínez Veloz, the commissioner for indigenous dialogue, marked the occasion by announcing that the government was prepared to re-establish dialogue with the group in a bid to promote peace in the country. Martínez’s announcement came as a surprise to many, given that the threat posed by the EZLN to the Mexican State today is nothing compared to that posed by organised crime.
