URUGUAY: Mujica compelled to ring changes

Cabinet changes have been few and far between since President José Mujica took office in March 2010, but last December saw two in a matter of days – and to key ministries. Mujica reluctantly accepted the resignation of his economy and finance minister, Fernando Lorenzo, on 21 December, in the immediate wake of the announcement that he will face an investigation by the supreme court into his role in the liquidation of the national air carrier, Pluna. He also appointed a new labour and social security minister after Eduardo Brenta left his position in order to run for a senate seat in general elections this October.
