COSTA RICA: Heading into the unknown

Considerable uncertainty surrounds the upcoming 2 February general elections. Polls suggest that neither of the two main presidential contenders, José María Villalta of the small left-wing Frente Amplio (FA), and Johnny Araya of the ruling centrist Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), are within sight of the 40% necessary for a first round victory. The polls also point to high voter apathy, and with some 30% of the electorate still undecided, there could be surprises on the day.
