PANAMA: A tough start to the year for Martinelli

President Ricardo Martinelli and his ruling Cambio Democrático have hit a rock ahead of the May general elections. In late December 2013, the international consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) threatened to suspend its work on the US$5.3bn Panama Canal expansion project unless the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) agreed to meet a US$1.6bn cost overrun. The two sides remain deadlocked.
