In 2011, when still leader of the opposition, Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie warned about a “tsunami of violence sweeping our nation”, and he blamed the surge in crime on “poor governance”, adding that the Free National Movement (FNM) government led by then prime minister Hubert Ingraham was “paralysed, unable to lead on this crucial issues”. It was a line of attack that no doubt contributed to Christie’s Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) decisively winning the May 2012 general election.
