Investing in energy: On 16 January Bolivia’s energy minister Juan José Sosa Soruco announced that the Morales government was planning to invest US$1.17bn in the energy sector between 2014-2018, adding a further 820MW to the national grid. Sosa said US$357m of this amount would be spent this year, contributing some 418.5MW to the national energy grid. Noting that maximum demand in 2013 was approximately 1,200MW, while capacity was at 1,485MW, Sosa also underlined that key projects were due to come on stream this year, including the US$44m Bulo Bulo thermoelectric plant in Cochabamba, which will generate 50MW.
