With his political position shored up by a successful result for the ruling Partido Unido Socialista de Venezuela (PSUV) in the December 2013 municipal elections, and no elections scheduled in 2014, President Nicolás Maduro this year intends to concentrate his energies on the so-called ‘economic war’ that he says is being waged against the country by the US and Colombian-backed right-wing opposition and private business sector.
