Between mid-November and mid-January the autodefensas (‘self-defence’ groups) of Michoacán had expanded their area of influence to seven municipal capital and eight new localities of Michoacán’s Tierra Caliente region and begun to move into Apatzingán, the main regional hub, and Uruapan, the state’s second-largest city.
