CENTRAL AMERICA: Military no panacea in Northern Triangle

The three countries of Central America’s Northern Triangle — El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras — have  resorted to deploying the military in support of the police in an attempt to curb their high rates of violent crime. They have not proven to be a panacea: Honduras has managed to bring down its homicide rate in the final year of President Porfirio Lobo’s mandate but it is still by far the highest in the region; El Salvador reports only a minimal improvement, while Guatemala recorded a slight increase.
