EL SALVADOR: First blood to Sánchez Cerén

Salvador Sánchez Cerén is the firm favourite to be the next president of El Salvador and gain full power for the left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) rather than the supporting role it enjoys under incumbent President Mauricio Funes. Sánchez Cerén almost secured victory in the first round of presidential elections on 2 February, winning an impressive 48.9% of the vote, a full 10 percentage points more than his closest rival, Norman Quijano, of the right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena).
