VENEZUELA: Maduro opts for six-day party to douse protests

Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has declared 27 and 28 February public holidays to mark 25 years since the Caracazo in 1989, when massive protests against the government of Carlos Andrés Pérez (1974-9, 1989-93) were brutally repressed. The local business federation Fedecámaras rejected the decision, as it means that Venezuela will have six straight days of rest, given the weekend and then public holidays for Carnival on Monday and Tuesday next week, at a time when the country is suffering from acute shortages of food and basic goods. The first day back at work will technically be Wednesday 5 March but the government is also planning special events on this day to mark the first anniversary of the death of former president, Hugo Chávez (1999-2013).
