Agreement in Michoacán legalises self-defence groups

Federal intervention in Michoacán has led to a formal agreement between the national government, the state government and the local self-defence groups which enables the latter to become part of the official public security apparatus either in temporary rural guard units or by joining municipal police forces, retaining their weapons once officially registered. The agreement also envisages purging the municipal and state governments of personnel found to have been colluding with organised crime.
