BRAZIL: Drug gangs seek to return to favelas

An attack on a police pacification unit (UPP) that claimed the life of one officer has alerted the Rio de Janeiro authorities to the fact that at least one of the big drug gangs is trying to recover some of the areas from which they were expelled by the ‘pacification’ drive. After the first response by the police was met by strong resistance, a broader sweep has been launched across four communities where drug-gang penetration was reported.
