The contest for the presidency has again taken another twist ahead of the 6 April second round. Earlier this month the presidential candidate for President Laura Chinchilla’s Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), former mayor of San José, Johnny Araya (1998-2001; 2003-2013), announced that he was abandoning the electoral race. While officially the vote must still take place as per the 1949 constitution, this effectively leaves the path clear for Araya’s competitor, Luis Guillermo Solís, of the centre-left Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) to become the next president, giving the PAC, which was formed in 2000 by PLN dissidents, the opportunity to hold office for the first time.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1018 words.
