CHILE: A foreign policy pivot?

President Michelle Bachelet has called for regional unity in Latin America to be strengthened via institutions like the new Union of South American Nations (Unasur, formed in 2008) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac, 2011). She also advocates strengthening ties with the Asia-Pacific region, but moving beyond the ‘mercantilist vision’ of the administration led by the conservative former businessman Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014). As president, Piñera was also a firm proponent of the new Pacific Alliance free trade bloc (comprising Mexico, Chile, Peru and Colombia), which is very Asia-Pacific focused.
