POLITICS: Correa cruises on to new challenges

Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa wasted no time dwelling on the adverse results of the 23 February municipal elections. Within days he had completely changed the political agenda by announcing his intention of pursuing a constitutional change in order to be able to stand for re-election in 2017, and soon after that he reshuffled his cabinet - twice. In the meantime, anyone hoping to get a full breakdown of the municipal results will get nowhere on the website of the national electoral council (CNE) one month after the elections and instead will have to rely on the unofficial results put out by the State media. Here the emphasis was placed firmly on the prefectural elections, where Correa’s Alianza País (AP) performed pretty strongly, rather than the mayoral elections where it underachieved overall but also suffered a series of high-profile defeats in provincial capitals, notably Quito.
