PERU: Why the public feels unsafe

Peruvians see insecurity as their biggest problem, and are not convinced that the government of President Ollanta Humala is capable of solving it. This poses a big problem for Humala, who half-way through his term of office has seen his approval rating falling to its lowest yet, and whose party faces regional and municipal elections next October. The often repeated argument that Peru has one of the lowest homicide rates in the region does not seem to have modified the public’s perception of insecurity.
