BRAZIL | Boosting air defence. The defence ministry has announced that it will lease up to 12 Gripen fighters from Saab to provide air defence during the Olympic Games of 2016. The decision was taken when it became clear that Saab would be unable to deliver before then sufficient number of the 36 fighters Brazil agreed to purchase last December. In separate deals Brazil has announced the purchase from Saab of an anti-aircraft system capable of hitting targets up to 5 kilometres away at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres, and has struck a technology transfer deal with Spain’s Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (Inta) which will allow it to build the Diana unmanned aircraft system and export it to other South American countries.
