Railways under limelight amid controversial reform proposal

The federal chamber of deputies on 4 February approved a bill that amended 11 articles of the Rail Service Law (Ley Reglamentaria del Servicio Ferroviario - LRSF) by 354 votes out of 500, with only 36 against and nine abstentions. The proposal was authored by legislators Abel Guerra and Fernando Maldonado, both members of the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI). It is currently being debated in the senate’s communications and transport committee, chaired by senator Javier Lozano of the conservative Partido Acción Nacional (PAN).
