Metro up and running. On 5 April the first line of the US$1.8bn Panama City metro - President Ricardo Martinelli’s flagship project – was inaugurated and began operations the following day. Constructed by international consortium Línea 1, (comprising Brazil’s Norberto Odebrecht, Spain’s Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas [FCC], and France’s Alstom), the metro line spans 13.7km; it will have 12 stations and will be able to transport 15,000 people per hour in both directions. The Martinelli government has already announced that the tender for the second line will be awarded by December 2014.
