AGRICULTURE: Government fails to avert another agricultural sector strike

The efforts by the government led by President Juan Manuel Santos to avert another national strike by the agricultural sector have failed. Less than a year after the last highly disruptive and politically damaging protests (in August-September 2013 [RA-13-10]), Colombian farmers are once again mobilising across the country to reiterate their demands for greater government assistance. The timing of the new protest action, less than a month before the 25 May presidential election, means that appeasing the sector is an immediate priority for President Santos. The danger is that this could result in his campaign becoming hostage to the rural sector’s demands.
