POLITICS & VIOLENCE: As ‘autodefensas’ disarm, Michoacán faces new threats

On 3 April interior minister Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong announced that with the arrest of some of the most important leaders of the Caballeros Templarios (LCT) drug trafficking organisation (DTO), Michoacán had moved on to ‘another moment’. The federal commissioner in Michoacán, Alfredo Castillo said that this ‘new moment’ would lead ‘within weeks’ to the disarming of the autodefensas and the withdrawal of their checkpoints on highways. Some of the autodefensa leaders insist that the LCT leaders still pose a threat, and that new threats are emerging — a view said to be shared by federal intelligence services.
