POINTERS

PARAGUAY | Clash with EPP in Concepción. A leading member of the Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo (EPP) guerrillas was killed in a clash with security forces on 2 April in Paso Tuyá de Azotey, Concepción. A 15-strong group of guerrillas had raided a Brazilian-owned grains silo in that locality. A four-strong army patrol responded to a call for help and engaged the guerrillas. In an exchange of gunfire, an army NCO and one of the guerrillas were killed; the latter was later identified as the 20-year-old Bernardo Bernal Maíz (‘Coco’), notorious as the youngest member of the organisation who had taken part in the 2009 kidnapping of the cattle rancher, Fidel Zavala, and for his later killing with explosives of an aunt who had become a police informant.
