ARGENTINA: More violence, but not more crime

While the government led by President Cristina Fernández has been able to shrug off concerns about the apparent growth in criminality raised in the opposition-dominated media, worries voice by Argentina’s Catholic Church are harder to ignore. Speaking on 10 May, Argentina’s security secretary, Sergio Berni, defended the government’s security agenda, arguing that “there is more violence but there is not more crime. Insecurity exists, but it is not the same as it was in 2001.”
