POLITICS: Not even superheroes can stop Yasuní drilling

“Even Batman signed for the YASunidos.” With this dismissive remark, the vice-president of Ecuador’s national electoral council (CNE), Paúl Salazar, rejected on 8 May the petition by the environmental advocacy group to stage a referendum on the government’s controversial decree last August to allow the exploitation of oil in the Yasuní national reserve. YASunidos has vowed to fight on, citing “manipulation” and “fraud” by the CNE throughout the process of verifying the petition signatures - but it is clutching at straws.
