SECURITY: The three new amigos

Ecuador’s defence minister, María Fernanda Espinosa, received her Peruvian and Colombian counterparts in Quito on 12 May, the first time the country has hosted such a tripartite meeting. It is a tribute to the success of Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa at ameliorating ties with his country’s neighbours that a meeting about trilateral defence cooperation was able to take place at all. Ecuador and Peru were at war as recently as 1995 and Ecuador did not seem far away from being on a war footing with Colombia after the Colombian military bombed a guerrilla camp of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) on Ecuadorean soil back in 2008.
