REGION: Fine-tuning the analysis of violent crime

Few of those following media coverage of Latin American security affairs will have missed the long series of headlines announcing — yet again — that the region has the highest homicide rates in the world, and that several countries are at the top of the global homicide league. Most if not all of this coverage was prompted by the annual report on homicide worldwide published by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc). Little of it, however, dwelled on the report’s effort to refine the analysis of violent crime with the purpose of contributing to improved anticrime policies.
