MEXICO: Crisis in Michoacán’s ‘self-defence’ movement

Two of the founding leaders of the self-defence (autodefensa) movement in Michoacán are currently facing criminal investigations amid charges and countercharges that these groups are being taken over by ‘infiltrators’ either linked to the drugs trade or opportunistic seizures of land ‘recovered’ from Los Caballeros Templarios (LCT). Complicating the panorama are claims that LCT members still at large have formed a new cartel.
