The president of the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), Gustavo Madero, called on members of his party on 22 May to rally round and set aside “petty thoughts of revenge” after he secured his re-election in the party’s first party presidential elections four days earlier by defeating Senator Ernesto Cordero Arroyo. Cordero recognised his defeat but emphatically rebuffed Madero’s call for party unity.
