President Enrique Peña Nieto sent a dignified message to Gustavo Madero after he secured re-election as president of the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) in internal elections on 18 May, but in private he must have performed a little jig. Madero’s opponent, Ernesto Cordero Arroyo, has made absolutely no secret of the fact that he dislikes the ‘Pact for Mexico’ cross-party pact which he sees as part of a covert strategy by the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) to entrench itself in power and re-establish its long hegemony over Mexican politics.
