Sánchez Cerén takes office with groundbreaking speech

Most of the foreign press covering the inauguration of Salvador Sánchez Cerén on 1 June dutifully reported that he is the first former guerrilla to become head of state in El Salvador. It is a remarkable feat but given this past it was perhaps even more noteworthy that Sánchez Cerén should have delivered the most conciliatory speech of any of his predecessors, repeating the mantra “united we can grow” on no fewer than nine separate occasions, and underlining his commitment to dialogue and negotiations with the political opposition and all sectors of society to help drive the country’s economic growth and improve social justice.
