EL SALVADOR: Sánchez Cerén courts business sector

President Salvador Sánchez Cerén moved swiftly after his conciliatory inaugural address on 1 June to reach out to the powerful national business association (Anep). Sánchez Cerén, accompanied by his finance minister, Carlos Cáceres, met senior representatives of Anep on 9 June to discuss cooperation to lift El Salvador out of its prolonged economic lethargy and the fiscal reform bill sent to the legislative assembly by the previous government. Anep offered Sánchez Cerén cooperation – but it is demanding its pound of flesh.
