HAITI: Renewed police concerns

The recent manhandling of an opposition senator Jean-Charles Moïse by the Haitian national police (PNH) has triggered concerns regarding the institution. It follows a shake-up which took place early last month in which the respected police director for the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, Michel-Ange Gédéon, was replaced after being in the job for three years. The concerns about police integrity will attract international attention given the need to strengthen the PNH ahead of the withdrawal of the United Nations stabilisation mission in Haiti (Minustah), which is now slated for 2016.
