POLITICS: Amid change in the air, Neves gets the nod

Former president Lula da Silva (2002-2010) is not the first to compare this year’s general election with that of 2002, when he was first elected after several unsuccessful attempts (in 1989, 1994 and 1998). Then, he noted, his left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT)’s campaign mantra was ‘hope will defeat fear’. In 2014, he suggests, it is ‘hope will defeat hate’. Critics suggest that the only ones sowing fear and hatred in the 2014 campaign is the PT itself, terrified at the prospect of losing power after 12 years in office.
