MINING: Mining law sanctioned

The executive led by President Evo Morales sanctioned a new mining law, following its approval by the lower chamber on 19 May and the senate on 8 May. The law, three years in the pipeline, had been a major bone of contention with mining cooperatives (cooperativistas), resulting in deadly clashes in March [RA-14-04] after the lower chamber introduced an amendment prohibiting cooperatives from signing mining contracts with private mining companies. The approval of the law, which replaces legislation passed in 1997 under the administration led by Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada (1993-1997; 2002-2003), is a fillip for the governing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), which is seeking to boost the sector.
