MEXICO: Michoacán governor resigns

Salvador Jara Guerrero is the new governor of the troubled western state of Michoacán, replacing Fausto Vallejo Figueroa, who resigned last week for health reasons. Jara Guerrero, an academic, was appointed on an interim basis until gubernatorial elections are held in Michoacán in June 2015, with the victor taking office the following October. Vallejo’s resignation coincided with damaging allegations about his son’s links to the Los Caballeros Templarios (LCT) drug trafficking organisation (DTO). It also comes as federal security forces struck a blow against the LCT with the arrest of the son of Servando ‘La Tuta’ Gómez Martínez, the leader of the group.
