Mexico officially assumed the pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance from Colombia on 20 June while hosting the group’s ninth summit in the beach resort of Punta Mita, in the western state of Nayarit. President Enrique Peña Nieto heaped praise on the Pacific Alliance – which includes Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru – as “the most daring regional integration mechanism of the decade”. The fact that Peña Nieto restricted the comparison to the last decade might have been a subliminal gesture to the decidedly imperfect customs union, the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), which was established in 1991.
