Last month Guatemala’s finance minister, María Castro, stepped down. Castro, who has been replaced by her deputy, Dorval Carías, is the second finance minister to quit since the Partido Patriota (PP) government led by President Otto Pérez Molina took office in January 2012. Officially, Castro resigned due to “work opportunities in international organisations”. However, her departure was widely attributed to the ministry's continued failure to meet tax collection targets.
