POLITICS & ELECTIONS: Campaigns kick off

Five presidential candidates have registered ahead of the 14 July deadline to take part in the 12 October general elections – a record low since Bolivia’s return to democracy in 1982. The manifestos unveiled by the main adversaries of President Evo Morales, who is seeking a third five-year term, reveal that the pledges to reduce poverty and social inequality that have underpinned the policies of Morales’s Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government since it first took office in 2006 are now firmly established as essential policy offerings.
