POLITICS & EDUCATION: Approval of controversial ‘university law’ puts Humala under renewed pressure

Two years after debates started in the legislature and six months since it was approved at the legislative committee level, Peru’s national congress voted on and approved a new ‘university law’ on 26 June. However, there still is heightened controversy over the legislation, which was approved with 56 votes in favour, only slightly above the 46 votes cast against it – which included the main opposition parties, the Fujimorista Fuerza Popular (FP), the Partido Popular Cristiano (PPC), Solidaridad Nacional (SN) and the Partido Aprista Peruano (PAP). There were only three abstentions, including one from a congressman from President Ollanta Humala’s own Partido Nacionalista Peruano (PNP).
