Uruguay set to receive Guantánamo prisoners

Haiti: On 19 July Haiti’s President Michel Martelly and Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe attended an event held in Florida, US, for the Haitian diaspora. The event, which was held at the North Miami Senior High auditorium, also included Haiti's ministers of commerce (Wilson Laleu), education (Nesmy Manigat), justice (Jean Renel Sanon), tourism (Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin) and communications (Rudy Hérivaux), as well as the police chief (Godson Orelus) and representatives from Haiti customs, and internal revenue services and the director of the government's social food assistance program. According to the Miami Herald, the Haitian government officials outlined changes under way in Haiti and took questions from members of the audience. Earlier in the day, Lamothe met members of the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition, who sought his support on lobbying the US administration led by President Barack Obama for the Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program. The programme seeks to reunite Haitian families who have already been approved for legal status in the US but remain in Haiti. According to the Miami Herald, the group also requested the appointment of an envoy that is to work with the Haitian government to push the community's agenda.
