DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: PRD formally splits
The Dominican Republic (DR)’s largest party, the left-wing Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), has undergone a major split after one of its two main warring factions opted to break away and form a new party. The PRD has been in a state of crisis ever since it lost the presidency to the smaller incumbent Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) for the second time in 2004. Many local analysts believe that the birth of the Partido Revolucionario Mayoritario (PRM) may well mark the demise of the PRD altogether, with a little less than two years to go until the May 2016 general elections.
