MEXICO-GUATEMALA | ‘Tightening’ the southern border. On 15 July Humberto Mayans Canabal, a senator for the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), was appointed coordinator of President Enrique Peña Nieto’s new ‘Frontera Sur’ border protection programme. Under pressure because of the crisis on Mexico’s northern border with the US (see pages 3-7), Peña Nieto has focused specifically on one of the causes: his southern border with Central America.
