The month of July saw President Enrique Peña Nieto’s 2013 education reform take a crucial step forward, as for the first time aspiring primary and secondary school teachers sat exams to compete for some 16,500 full-time and part-time positions under rules established by the newly created national education evaluation institute (INEE) and the professional teaching service, which in addition to entrance examinations have also introduced a requirement for teachers to undergo regular evaluations in order to keep their jobs and secure promotions. Close to 130,000 applicants sat the exams, more than 80% of those that had registered an interest.
